Gevery-Chambertin 2001

I came across this French beauty completely by accident. Sometimes you stand at your favorite, or in my case closest, wine store and think to yourself, let's try something really different. Granted, a little cliche, especially since its a red Burgundy, but that's just how this bottle ended up on my 'coffee' table.
Anyway, for the tasting notes. First, since this a red Burgundy, its most likely a hundred percent Pinot Noir. It has a beautiful medium to dark red color. It's nose is not explosive, but has a very appealing combination of cherries, dark berries, along with some soft leather tones. On the palate, the berry flavors really develop and set the tone of the wine. The wine also takes on a very delicate spiciness in the mouth, which makes it very intriguing and serves to balance the wine well. The finish, although short lived, is dominated by soft leather and earthy aromas. Overall, this a medium bodied red wine, well balanced, and quite pleasant to the senses.
Although I had this wine on its own, I think it would complement a nice filet mignon quite well, or even a good old burger. Personally, I think its perfect to have just by itself. For the price and grape varietal, this wine should definitely be on everyone's 'coffee' table. Enjoy.
